Wood-Mizer sawmill equipment performed well, though the market for portable band mills isn’t as strong as it once was. A 2014 Wood-Mizer LT40 with nearly 5,000 hours sold for $19,000, demonstrating that well-maintained machines still bring solid prices.
The top seller was the 2023 Wood-Mizer WM4500 commercial sawmill package, which included the transfer equipment and the Wood-Mizer EG400 edger. This system drew nationwide interest before selling for $230,000 to Apex Lumber in California. Bidders from Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada participated—proving that top-tier sawmill equipment remains in high demand.
Beyond sawmills, other notable results included a 2000 John Deere 8410 tractor that sold for $100,000 and a 1998 Peterbilt 379 truck that brought $27,500. Those good old, pre-emission Petes—especially the 378 and 379 models—continue to stay in high demand. Wheel loaders and dozers moved well, while skid loaders and skidders proved slightly tougher to sell in this auction.
Factory Direct Auctions: First Round a Success
This auction cycle also marked the first test of factory-direct auctions—a strategy Bright Star is embracing with enthusiasm. With a strong start, the company plans to expand this format further, offering minimal select factory-direct equipment in traditional yard auctions while also conducting separate online factory-direct auctions. Mini excavators sold between $7,000 and $8,000, while golf carts brought in $5,000 to $5,500. Demand for 40-foot containers was strong in Middlebury, where one sold for $7,500, though the response was a tad softer in the Lake Erie region.
Yoder Sawmill Auction – April 4 in Millersburg, OH
Set for April 4 in Millersburg, Ohio, the Yoder Sawmill Auction will showcase some of the best late-model sawmill and forestry equipment to hit the auction block in recent memory. This is a must-attend event for serious buyers looking for name brands like McDonough, Cleereman, Salem, and Tigercat.
Most of the equipment in this auction is “2010 or newer,” one-owner, and exceptionally well-maintained—making it a rare opportunity to secure top-tier sawmill assets. Rolling stock is still being added, further strengthening the already impressive lineup. Additionally, the Arrowhead Sawmill, owned by E-Pallet, will also be sold on the same day. Located in Fredericksburg, OH, this sale adds even more depth to the auction, with premium sawmill machinery and related equipment available for purchase.
Market Outlook: Strong Pipeline and Continued Demand
The next IronRing Auction, on April 8, is generating buzz, and early indications suggest another strong turnout. A few highlights include a 2022 Doosan dozer, a 2023 Cat 310 excavator, a 2023 JD 948L-II skidder, a nice lineup of tractors, and a 2024 Woodpecker JR pallet nailer.
On April 15, four sawmill liquidations are set to take place. This will be an all-day affair, with just enough time to use the restroom and refill your coffee cup before returning to the phone for the next auction. These businesses are either closing or pivoting their focus to other segments of the industry—reflecting the natural churn of the market. Much like farm auctions, sawmill liquidations are a regular occurrence, as businesses continuously enter and exit the industry in response to its ebb and flow.
As these auctions approach, demand for high-quality sawmill and forestry equipment remains strong. Buyers looking to expand operations should keep an eye on these upcoming opportunities.
