As we enter the last quarter of 2024, the equipment market is experiencing its usual seasonal rush, with December gearing up to be a particularly busy month. Numerous auctions are lined up before year-end, setting the stage for significant sales activity in the weeks ahead. This year, we’ve seen some ups and downs, particularly in sawmill equipment, while demand for good rolling stock and picker trucks continues to hold strong.
Kropf Brothers Logging & Lumber Auction Recap
The Kropf Brothers Logging & Lumber Auction largely met expectations. However, as anticipated, the sawmill equipment struggled due to the current sideways market. Larger systems such as the Cleereman sawmill system sold for $35,000 and the 2018 gang saw edger combo fetched $47,500, reflecting a stable demand for newer machinery.
Rolling stock, on the other hand, saw positive outcomes. The 2015 Peterbilt log truck surpassed expectations, leading the auction with an impressive $170,000. As Eugene Hochstetler observed, “Quality, late-model picker trucks like this one remain in high demand,” emphasizing a continued appetite for well-maintained trucks in today’s market.
The HK Logging auction in Middlefield OH that was scheduled for September 26 has been postponed to January 25, 2025. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
Lake Erie Auction
The Lake Erie Auction saw a welcomed boost in buyer enthusiasm, with Eugene noting an uptick in participation. As we head into the final quarter, this renewed energy is a promising sign for upcoming auctions. Noteworthy results included a 4020 John Deere tractor, which sold for $14,000, and the lifts, which also performed well.
These auctions indicate that while certain sectors, such as sawmill equipment, are experiencing stagnation, there’s an underlying strength in areas like rolling stock, heavy equipment, and late-model trucks. This sector-specific demand highlights the evolving dynamics of the market as we approach year-end.
